Dear New Brighton Families,
Our first week of school has gone extremely well! We were fortunate to have great weather on the first day, which allowed us to greet students outside before heading to classrooms. Since then, we’ve only had to move recess indoors a couple of times due to air quality.
Today we held our Welcome Assembly with a fun new twist—each grade chose their own “walk-in song” that played as they entered the gym. The energy was high, and we even saw some great dance moves! The assembly was also a chance to officially welcome our new students and staff, and to start putting some new names to faces.
Mrs. Barr and I read You Be You by Linda Kranz, a wonderful book that celebrates individuality and reminds us that everyone has something unique to contribute to the world.
Designate a Meeting Place
To ensure safe and smooth pick-up at 3:00 p.m., please establish a designated meeting spot with your child. Students in grades 1–5 will exit through their designated doors and should go directly to this spot.
- Meeting spots should not be in the school parking lot, which is off-limits to parents and students.
 - Kindergarten teachers will wait with students until a parent arrives.
 - If a student does not see their parent after five minutes, they have been instructed to come to the office through the front entrance for assistance.

Label Everything
Each year, thousands of dollars’ worth of clothing and other items are donated because they go unclaimed in our Lost and Found. Please label all belongings with your child’s name so we can quickly return found items to them.
Parking Lot and Crosswalk Safety
For everyone’s safety, we kindly remind families not to cut through the parking lot. With limited space and high student traffic, this poses a significant risk. Please remember the parking lot is for staff only—and even then, we do not have enough spaces for all staff members.
We also ask adults to model safe behaviour for our nearly 600 students. Please use crosswalks rather than jaywalking. Not only is jaywalking unsafe and illegal, but it also sends the wrong message to our students about road safety.
Our School Safety Patrols will begin next week. They’ll be completing their training, so please be patient as they learn the routines and expectations of this important role.
A Few Important Reminders from Week 1:
· Utensils: Please pack any spoons or forks your child may need, as the school does not provide utensils.
· No Dogs on School Grounds: For safety reasons, dogs are not permitted on school property.
· Proper Footwear for PE and Recess: Students will be outside for PE and recess. Sandals and flip-flops, while comfortable for warm weather, are not safe for physical activity. Please ensure your child wears appropriate footwear.
· Playground Access During School Hours: Our playground is in use throughout the day for recess, lunch, and PE classes, and is therefore closed to the public during school hours.
- Kindergarten students waiting with parents before or after their class time may use the playground if it is not being used by other classes.
 - After 3:00 p.m., the playground is open to the public and no longer supervised by school staff.
