Dear New Brighton Families,

What a wonderful second week of school it has been at New Brighton School!

Mrs. Barr and I had the opportunity to visit every classroom this week and share the wonderful book You’re Here for a Reason by Nancy Tillman with our students. The message of the book—that each of us has a purpose and that we all have an important role to play in the world—was a wonderful way to connect with our students as we begin a new school year together.

During each classroom visit, we also challenged every student to complete five acts of kindness throughout the day. It has been incredible to see how quickly this simple challenge has made an impact across our school. We have already noticed students looking for opportunities to help others, include their classmates, offer encouragement, and spread kindness throughout our building.

It is a wonderful reminder that small acts can make a big difference. We are so proud of the way our students have embraced this challenge, and we are excited to see where their kindness takes us as the year continues.

Thank you to our students, staff, and families for helping make the start of this school year such a positive one. We are looking forward to all that is to come!

Sending treats to school

Just a friendly reminder that students are not permitted to bring treats to share with their classmates when celebrating special events, such as birthdays. We absolutely love celebrating milestones with our students and making them feel special! Unfortunately, due to CBE guidelines and allergy considerations, we are unable to share food treats in the classroom. Thank you so much for your understanding and for helping us keep everyone safe!

Classroom Complexity Team

This fall, the CBE has hired hundreds of teachers, education assistants and other school staff to support student learning. These positions have been funded by the Government of Alberta with the intention of addressing classroom complexity and class sizes.

We are pleased to welcome additional new staff to our school for the 2026-27 school year:

Ms. Laura Foster has accepted our CCT teaching position, while Mrs. Cretain and Mrs. Gorchynski will be our CCT Educational Assistants.

We are very pleased to welcome back Ms. Foster to NBS, and this funding has allowed us to maintain the classroom supports from last year with Mrs. Cretain and Mrs. Gorchynski. This additional staff will help ensure students benefit from:

  • Increased teacher attention
  • Improved classroom learning environments
  • Greater support for diverse learning needs

Designate a Meeting Place

To ensure safe and smooth pick-up at 3:00 p.m., please establish a designated meeting spot with your child. Students in grades 1–5 will exit through their designated doors and should go directly to this spot.

  • Meeting spots should not be in the school parking lot, which is off-limits to parents and students.
  • Kindergarten teachers will wait with students until a parent arrives.
  • If a student does not see their parent after five minutes, they have been instructed to come to the office through the front entrance for assistance.

Label Everything

Each year, thousands of dollars’ worth of clothing and other items are donated because they go unclaimed in our Lost and Found. Please label all belongings with your child’s name so we can quickly return found items to them.

Parking Lot and Crosswalk Safety

For everyone’s safety, we kindly remind families not to cut through the parking lot. With limited space and high student traffic, this poses a significant risk. Please remember the parking lot is for staff only—and even then, we do not have enough spaces for all staff members.

We also ask adults to model safe behaviour for our nearly 600 students. Please use crosswalks rather than jaywalking. Not only is jaywalking unsafe and illegal, but it also sends the wrong message to our students about road safety.

Our School Safety Patrols will begin on Tuesday. They’ll be completing their training, so please be patient as they learn the routines and expectations of this important role.

A Few Important Reminders from Week 2:

·         Utensils: Please pack any spoons or forks your child may need, as the school does not provide utensils.

·         No Dogs on School Grounds: For safety reasons, dogs are not permitted on school property.

·         Proper Footwear for PE and Recess: Students will be outside for PE and recess. Sandals and flip-flops, while comfortable for warm weather, are not safe for physical activity. Please ensure your child wears appropriate footwear.

·         Playground Access During School Hours: Our playground is in use throughout the day for recess, lunch, and PE classes, and is therefore closed to the public during school hours.

    • Kindergarten students waiting with parents before or after their class time may use the playground if it is not being used by other classes.
    • After 3:00 p.m., the playground is open to the public and no longer supervised by school staff.
