Dear New Brighton Families,

Our first week of school has gone extremely well! We were fortunate to have great weather on the first day, which allowed us to greet students outside before heading to classrooms. The dry weather has encouraged many students and parents to ride bikes, scooters, and skateboards to school, which we are always excited to see! Please remember to prioritize safety by wearing a helmet and ensuring bikes are securely locked. We've noticed several bikes arriving without locks this past week, and unfortunately, we did have some stolen in the past that were not recovered. We want to prevent this from happening again.

Additionally, we kindly ask that all riders, young and old, walk their scooters, bikes, or skateboards once on school property. We've had a few near misses at the start of the year, and we want to make sure everyone stays safe.

Yesterday we held our Welcome Back Assembly with each grade entering to their own “walk-in song” that played as they entered the gym. The energy was high, and we even saw some great dance moves! The assembly was also a chance to officially welcome our new students and staff, and to start putting some new names to faces.

Designate a Meeting Place

To ensure safe and smooth pick-up at 3:00 p.m., please establish a designated meeting spot with your child. Students in grades 1–5 will exit through their designated doors and should go directly to this spot.

  • Meeting spots should not be in the school parking lot, which is off-limits to parents and students.
  • Kindergarten teachers will wait with students until a parent arrives.
  • If a student does not see their parent after five minutes, they have been instructed to come to the office through the front entrance for assistance.

Label Everything

Each year, thousands of dollars’ worth of clothing and other items are donated because they go unclaimed in our Lost and Found. Please label all belongings with your child’s name so we can quickly return found items to them.

Parking Lot and Crosswalk Safety

For everyone’s safety, we kindly remind families not to cut through the parking lot. With limited space and high student traffic, this poses a significant risk. Please remember the parking lot is for staff only—and even then, we do not have enough spaces for all staff members.

We also ask adults to model safe behaviour for our nearly 600 students. Please use crosswalks rather than jaywalking. Not only is jaywalking unsafe and illegal, but it also sends the wrong message to our students about road safety.

Our School Safety Patrols will begin on Tuesday. They’ll be completing their training, so please be patient as they learn the routines and expectations of this important role.

A Few Important Reminders from Week 1:

·         Utensils: Please pack any spoons or forks your child may need, as the school does not provide utensils.

·         No Dogs on School Grounds: For safety reasons, dogs are not permitted on school property.

·         Proper Footwear for PE and Recess: Students will be outside for PE and recess. Sandals and flip-flops, while comfortable for warm weather, are not safe for physical activity. Please ensure your child wears appropriate footwear.

·         Playground Access During School Hours: Our playground is in use throughout the day for recess, lunch, and PE classes, and is therefore closed to the public during school hours.

    • Kindergarten students waiting with parents before or after their class time may use the playground if it is not being used by other classes.
    • After 3:00 p.m., the playground is open to the public and no longer supervised by school staff.

Reminder: Annual Volunteer Registration Required for All School Volunteers

To ensure the safety and security of CBE students and staff, all volunteers must be registered with the school each school year before participating in volunteer activities.

The Annual Volunteer Registration Form is valid for the current school year only. All volunteers, including returning volunteers, must complete a new registration form each school year before participating in volunteer activities.

·         Process

Parents and guardians can register as volunteers through the SchoolEngage tab in their MyCBE account. As part of the registration process, all volunteers must review the POPA requirements and sign to indicate their agreement with the conditions outlined in the form.

·         New This Year: Community members who do not have a child registered with CBE must complete their volunteer registration in person at the school where they wish to volunteer. This change allows school staff to verify that volunteers have reviewed and acknowledged their privacy obligations under Alberta's Protection of Privacy Act (POPA).

·         Next Steps

Please share this information with your school community and ensure all volunteers complete the Annual Volunteer Registration Form before participating in volunteer activities during the school year.

Parents and guardians can access the form through the SchoolEngage tab in their MyCBE account. Community members without a child in the system should be directed to the school where they wish to volunteer to complete their registration in person.
