Dear New Brighton Families,
What a wonderful way to bring our school community together! A huge thank-you to our New Brighton School Parent Council for organizing and hosting last night’s Family Dance. We appreciate the time and effort that went into planning such a fun evening for our students and families!
A reminder that Monday is a holiday for Thanksgiving, so there will be no school. We hope all of our families enjoy the long weekend and have an opportunity to spend some quality time together.
Our October Read-a-Thon is well underway! Please remember to keep track of your child’s reading minutes throughout the month. We love encouraging a love of reading, and every minute counts!
With the beautiful fall weather we’ve been enjoying, several classes have taken advantage of the sunshine by heading out for community walks and opportunities for learning on the land. It has been wonderful to see our students exploring their surroundings, making connections, and learning beyond the classroom walls.
Wishing everyone a wonderful Thanksgiving long weekend filled with family, friends, and gratitude. We look forward to seeing everyone back at school on Tuesday!
Bhangra Dance Performance – Friday, October 16
After an exciting two-week Bhangra Dance Residency, we are thrilled to invite families to celebrate our students’ hard work and learning during a special performance on Friday morning, October 16!
Due to the size of our gymnasium, we will be hosting two separate performances to accommodate our students and guests. Please see the schedule below and plan accordingly.
- Kindergarten, Grades 1 & 2: 9:00–9:30 a.m. (Doors open at 8:50 a.m.)
- Grades 3, 4 & 5: 9:45–10:15 a.m. (Doors open at 9:35 a.m.)
We are so proud of our students and look forward to sharing their learning, energy, and enthusiasm with our school community. We hope you can join us
Fees
Central fees will be posted directly to students’ PowerSchool accounts. These fees include the student supply fee, noon supervision fee, and school bus fees for students who ride the bus daily. These fees are assigned to student accounts centrally by the CBE.
Staying for Lunch
Students are not required to remain at school during the lunch period. However, Grade 1–6 students and full-day kindergarten students who stay at school for lunch are required to be registered for the CBE’s noon supervision service.
Students in these grades must be supervised during the lunch period. The noon supervision fees help cover the costs associated with providing this service. For more information, please review Administrative Regulation 3048 – Noon Services and the Education Act.
If you have not yet registered your student for noon supervision, please visit the CBE’s step-by-step registration instructions for assistance.
If your student will not be going home for lunch, please email Mrs. McMaster at smmcmaster@cbe.ab.ca to let us know.
Parking Around the School
We have started to see some of the old unsafe traffic habits come back. We remind all parents and guardians to please set a proper example for our students and follow the bylaws and laws that are in place to keep our children safe. Jaywalking, U-turns, entering an occupied crosswalk, and parking in a manner that blocks driveways all come with a fine but, more importantly, create a very dangerous environment for everyone. Being late is not an excuse for not following these laws, and we all need to do our part to ensure we are being good neighbours. Remember, young eyes are watching us.
The signage is very clear where parking is permitted and is placed in a manner to allow all our children to walk to school in a safe environment. Our Bus Zone is designed to allow the buses an easy/safe approach and departure from the front of the school.
Our staff parking lot is at its maximum capacity, and having parents drop students off in the parking lot is against school board regulations. This is due to the fact it creates a very unsafe situation for our children walking to school who use the sidewalk that crosses over the entrance to the lot. The staff parking lot is for staff only, with the only exception being the two handicap spots, and we have students who require access to those spots every day and during pick-up and drop-off.
Calgary Parking Authority continues to be contacted by a number of our neighbours who have had their driveways and garage doors blocked by parents/guardians of students attending our school. We strive to do our best to be good neighbours, and as parents/guardians of students at New Brighton School, you are all representatives of our school community. Unfortunately, the actions of a few can reflect on the whole, and we were saddened to hear about the lack of courtesy being offered to our neighbours.
Please read the reminders from The Parking Authority to familiarize yourself with the City of Calgary Parking Bylaws. They state:
Please be courteous and consider the following when dropping off or picking up your children from school.
- Avoid double parking
- Watch for signs indicating ‘No Stopping’ and ‘No Parking’ zones
- Leave 5 metres (16 feet) between your car and any crosswalk markings. This will ensure children are visible when they enter the crosswalk.
- School bus zones must be kept clear so children can step off the bus and onto a curb instead of exiting into a busy street.
- Parking too close to stop signs, yield signs or intersections makes it difficult to see children in the area and obstructs the view of other motorists. A distance of 5 metres is required.
- Blocking entrances to garages or driveways angers neighbours. Stay back at least 1.5 metres (5 feet).
- All parking infractions in school zones are subject to a minimum $50 fine.
Please park responsibly and help make streets safe for our children.
