Dear NBS Families,

We were happy to welcome the return of warmer weather this week. Along with the warmer temperatures, however, comes the return of mud and a very wet field. The cooler mornings followed by warmer afternoons often mean students take off their jackets, toques, and gloves during recess and, unfortunately, many of those items are forgotten outside. As a result, our lost and found is quickly filling up again with some very expensive clothing items.

We kindly ask families to label your child’s belongings whenever possible. Our wonderful supervisors collect lost items from outside each day, and anything with a name on it is quickly returned to the student. Items without names are placed in the lost and found, and many students forget they ever owned them.

We had our second Lockdown practice of the year today. The drill went very smoothly, with students following procedures and listening to directions. As mentioned in the Lockdown letter that went home today, all of our Lockdown practices are completed with the support of the Calgary Police Service. Each year, they commend our students and staff for their calm, quiet, and consistent adherence to the procedures throughout the drill.

Last Friday’s professional development day provided our staff with the opportunity to work with Chantal Gagnon, an Indigenous Knowledge Keeper. The session focused on supporting staff learning and understanding of Indigenous cultures, histories, and perspectives. This work aligns with our responsibilities as educators and with the commitments of the Calgary Board of Education, as well as the Calls to Action from the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada, which highlight the important role education plays in fostering reconciliation and mutual respect.

As part of the learning, staff were introduced to Indigenous drumming as a cultural teaching. The experience provided an opportunity for staff to deepen their understanding of Indigenous traditions and perspectives so that we can continue to better support and serve all of our students.

Kindergarten Registration for September 2026

Kindergarten registration opened on January 12, 2026.  Registration is NOT first come first served.  Everyone who submits a completed registration form online will be eligible for the kindergarten for the 20026-2027 school year. Typically, New Brighton School holds a random draw for AM/PM placement preference as our AM classes usually have higher demand, and we need to balance our student numbers between the morning classes and afternoon classes. To be in the draw for AM/PM preferences, you will need to have your registration completed before the draw date, which is March 19, 2026. All registrations after March 19, 2026, will be placed in PM classes.

For more information about kindergarten registration, please see the CBE registration guide by clicking here.
