Dear NBS Families,

March is certainly living up to its reputation, bringing us a little bit of everything when it comes to weather. We were able to take advantage of Tuesday’s spring-like temperatures to conduct a fire drill. At this time of year, we do not notify students or staff in advance, so the drill more closely reflects a real emergency. This means some students may be in common areas or washrooms, requiring them to quickly identify and use the nearest exit rather than the one closest to their classroom.

Both students and staff did an excellent job responding to the alarm, locating the closest exits, and finding their classes at the designated muster points. We were very proud of how calmly and efficiently everyone responded, with the entire drill completed in under 10 minutes from start to finish.

Please see the information below regarding next week’s Parent/Teacher Conferences. YYC Food Trucks will also be on site Thursday evening for families who would like a quick and easy dinner option. Five percent of all sales will be donated back to our Parent Association to support the many wonderful opportunities they help provide for our school community.

World Down Syndrome Awareness Day

World Down Syndrome Awareness Day is marked each year on March 21.  The 21st day of the 3rd month signifies the triplication of the 21st chromosome, which causes Down Syndrome. This year WDSD is on Saturday, March 21, 2026, but we will be recognizing it here at NBS on Thursday, March 19th.

A universal way to celebrate World Down Syndrome Day and to spread awareness is an event called "Rock Your Socks". To participate, you wear bright, mismatched socks on March 21st. The socks are used as a conversation starter. When someone asks why you are wearing crazy socks, you can reply, "I am rocking my socks to spread Down syndrome awareness and to advocate for acceptance and inclusion." Students are welcome to join us in spreading awareness this Thursday by rocking their socks.

Kindergarten Registration for September 2026

Kindergarten registration opened on January 12, 2026.  Registration is NOT first come first served.  Everyone who submits a completed registration form online will be eligible for the kindergarten for the 20026-2027 school year. Typically, New Brighton School holds a random draw for AM/PM placement preference as our AM classes usually have higher demand, and we need to balance our student numbers between the morning classes and afternoon classes. To be in the draw for AM/PM preferences, you will need to have your registration completed before the draw date, which is March 19, 2026. All registrations after March 19, 2026, will be placed in PM classes.

For more information about kindergarten registration, please see the CBE registration guide by clicking here.
