Dear NBS Families,

We are pleased to inform you that our school has been allocated 1 additional teaching positio for the 2026–27 school year through the Government of Alberta’s Class Size Reduction Grant.

This grant funds teaching positions that support improved learning conditions in kindergarten to Grade 9 classrooms.

This funding is specifically intended to help reduce class sizes in core subject areas (English Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies), with priority given to schools experiencing the greatest class size pressures.

This decision was made using system-wide data that considers:

  • The number of classes exceeding provincial class size benchmarks
  • Projected enrolment and class organization
  • School programming and grade configuration

Our goal is to ensure students benefit from:

  • Increased teacher attention
  • Improved classroom learning environments
  • Greater support for diverse learning needs

We remain committed to supporting strong learning environments for all students and using our resources thoughtfully and strategically.

Thank you,

Patrick Murphy

Grade 5 Camp Kindle – Update

Unfortunately, we were contacted by Camp Kindle yesterday and informed that they must cancel our Grade 5 camp trip scheduled for June 15–17. Camp Kindle has recently been managing an illness-related situation and has been working closely with Alberta Health Services to determine the cause and appropriate next steps. Out of an abundance of caution and with the safety and well-being of our students and staff in mind, they have made the difficult decision to cancel our visit.

Camp Kindle will be issuing a full refund for our booking. Families who have already paid camp fees will receive a refund through the school. More information regarding the refund process will be shared as soon as it is available.

We recognize that a tremendous amount of fundraising was completed throughout the year, with significant support from our amazing Parent Council, to help make this experience possible. As a result, we are exploring opportunities to use those funds to provide alternative experiences for our Grade 5 students, such as field trips and special activities. Any experiences that we are able to arrange will be available to all Grade 5 students, regardless of whether they were originally planning to attend camp.

Please watch for future School Messenger communications and permission forms, as any opportunities we are able to secure may require a quick turnaround.

We understand how disappointing this news is for our students and families, and we share that disappointment. We met with the Grade 5 students this afternoon to explain the situation and answer their questions. Please know that we are working hard to explore alternative options and will communicate further details as soon as they become available.

New Brighton School Used Book Sale

New Brighton School will be hosting our fourth annual used book sale for students from June 23rd until June 25th. Our school will be collecting gently used children’s books that are appropriate for children aged 5 to 11. Families can start bringing in used books starting Monday morning. Below are some guidelines regarding book donations:

- Please make sure books are appropriate for children aged 5-11. This includes picture books and chapter books.

- Books need to be in good, used condition. This means no rips or stains.

- There is no limit to how many books can be donated. Students can either bring books into the classroom or donate them in a book bin at the front entrance each morning until June 20th.

On June 23rd to 25th, students at New Brighton School will be given the opportunity to purchase books from our used book sale. Books will all be priced at $1 each. If you wish to have your child purchase a book, please send money in with your child in a small Ziploc bag on June 23 and 24 (ideally with their name labelled on it). The money collected will be used within the school to support student learning and will be used for new resources within the library.

Thank you for your support with New Brighton’s used book sale. We appreciate your support and book donations.
