Dear NBS Families,
As a school community, we do many things together, and on this occasion, we need to come together to support one another. It is with a heavy heart that we notify you of the death of Mrs. Nicole Delany, former Grade 4 teacher at our school. Nicole had been on a medical leave for the past year while she bravely fought her battle with cancer.
We are informing our school community today and we encourage you to speak with your child about this loss. We recognize children may have questions and we encourage families to answer these questions according to their own family beliefs and values.
An incident like this may affect individuals differently, and it is important to seek help when needed. Students are encouraged to talk with their family members about their feelings and lean on their support as they process this loss. They are also encouraged to support one another and reach out to trusted adults at school to discuss their emotions.
For additional support, you may wish to contact Kids Help Phone at 1-800-668-6868 or text them at 686868, or the Calgary Distress Centre at 403-266-HELP (4357).
Our sincere condolences are extended to Nicole’s family at this very difficult time.
If you have any concerns about your own children, please do not hesitate to contact the school.
Sincerely,
Patrick Murphy
Principal New Brighton School
Weekly Update
Next week promises to be exciting with several classes heading out on field trips! The Grade 1 students will visit the Ann and Sandy Cross Conservation Area, while the Grade 4 students will explore Telus Spark. On Thursday, students can look forward to the always-popular Coco Brooks Fun Lunch. Please note that Friday, January 31st, is a Professional Development Day, so there will be no school for students. Our staff will be collaborating with Haultain Memorial and Midnapore Schools to focus on the goals outlined in our school development plan.
Kindergarten Registration for September 2025
Kindergarten registration opens on January 13, 2025. Registration is NOT first come first served. Everyone who submits a completed registration form online between January 13, 2025 and by noon February 11, 2025, will be eligible for the kindergarten lottery if we are in a situation where we have more applications than we currently have space for. We have not had to go into a lottery for the past two years but it is always a possibility in a young community like New Brighton.
For more information about kindergarten registration please visit the CBE kindergarten page by clicking here.
Parking Around the School
We have started to see some of the old unsafe traffic habits come back. We remind all parents and guardians to please set a proper example for our students and follow the bylaws and laws that are in place to keep our children safe. Jaywalking, U-turns, entering an occupied crosswalk, and parking in a manner that blocks driveways all come with a fine but more importantly, create a very dangerous environment for everyone. Being late is not an excuse for not following these laws and we all need to do our part to ensure we are being good neighbours. Remember young eyes are watching us.
The signage is very clear where parking is permitted and is placed in a manner to allow all our children to walk to school in a safe environment. Our Bus Zone is designed to allow the buses an easy/safe approach and departure from the front of the school.
Our staff parking lot is at its maximum capacity and having parents drop students off in the parking lot is against school board regulations. This is due to the fact it creates a very unsafe situation for our children walking to school who use the sidewalk that crosses over the entrance to the lot. The staff parking lot is for staff only with the only exception being the two handicap spots and we have students who require access to those spots every day and pick-up and drop-off.
Calgary Parking Authority continues to be contacted by a number of our neighbours who have had their driveways and garage doors blocked by parents/guardians of students attending our school. We strive to do our best to be good neighbours and as parents/guardians of students at New Brighton School, you are all representatives of our school community. Unfortunately, the actions of a few can reflect on the whole, and we were saddened to hear about the lack of courteousness being offered to our neighbours.
Please read the reminders from The Parking Authority to familiarize yourself with the City of Calgary Parking Bylaws. They state:
Please be courteous and consider the following when dropping off or picking up your children from school.
- Avoid double parking
 - Watch for signs indicating ‘No Stopping’ and ‘No Parking’ zones
 - Leave 5 metres (16 feet) between your car and any crosswalk markings. This will ensure children are visible when they enter the crosswalk.
 - School bus zones must be kept clear so children can step off the bus and onto a curb instead of exiting into a busy street.
 - Parking too close to stop signs, yield signs or intersections makes it difficult to see children in the area and obstructs the view of other motorists. A distance of 5 metres is required.
 - Blocking entrances to garages or driveways angers neighbours. Stay back at least 1.5 metres (5 feet).
 - All parking infractions in school zones are subject to a minimum $50 fine.

Please park responsibly and help make streets safe for our children.
