Dear NBS Families,
This was our last full five-day week for a while, with the Teacher’s Convention coming up next Thursday and Friday, followed by Family Day on Monday, February 19th. Additionally, Friday, February 28th, is a PD Day, meaning no school for students.
The deep freeze at the start of the week kept students indoors, even our resilient Polar Bear Club, as temperatures dropped into the mid-minus thirties. While we keep students active in Phys Ed and with extra activities like 9 Square in our gathering space, nothing quite compares to getting outside for fresh air and space to release their energy. Yesterday’s minus eleven degrees felt almost tropical, finally allowing students to get outdoors and move again.
Kindergarten Registration for September 2025
Kindergarten registration opened on January 13, 2025. Registration is NOT first come first served. Everyone who submits a completed registration form online between January 13, 2025 and by noon this Tuesday, February 11, 2025, will be eligible for the kindergarten lottery if we are in a situation where we have more applications than we currently have space for. We have not had to go into a lottery for the past two years but it is always a possibility in a young community like New Brighton.
For more information about kindergarten registration please visit the CBE kindergarten page by clicking here.
Black History Month
Students throughout the CBE and here at NBS have been learning about Black history month. This week, our grade fours learned and discussed what Black History Month is and the history of how it started. Students also listened to books and watched videos on the lives of Viola Desmond and Willie O’Ree to learn more about their lives and how they impacted Canadian history. Throughout the month, they will be reading a variety of books and learning about other Black Canadians who have impacted Canada, both in history and in the present day. They will be learning how they showed perseverance and resilience to stand up for what they believed in and fight for the rights they deserved.
The link below is to a playlist of CBC kids videos, books, short stories etc. if your family is looking to explore more on Black History Month.
