Dear NBS Families,

We knew the cold weather was coming, but it still hit hard, with wind chill temperatures nearing minus 40 mid-week. This meant many indoor recesses and lunch breaks as we waited for warmer conditions to return. During these indoor times, students had the opportunity to catch highlights from the Olympic Games Milano Cortina 2026 and proudly watched athletes from Canada capture several medals. The excitement and national pride were evident throughout the school, and we look forward to cheering on our athletes this weekend as the Games come to a close.

A huge thank you goes out to Mrs. Danyluk, who once again brought the Olympic spirit to life through daily PE classes. True to form, she created engaging and memorable experiences that allowed our students to connect with the excitement of the Games. Who knows—perhaps a few Olympics from now, we will be cheering on some of our own students as they reflect on how they were first inspired by the ski jumping and other activities they experienced in Mrs. Danyluk’s PE classes.

Alien In-line Skating Residency

We are very excited to begin our 1st PE Residency Program of the year... Alien In-Line Skating!  Beginning on Wednesday, February 25th, through Thursday, March 19th, during our Phys. Ed. classes students will be given the opportunity to learn new skills and participate in a very exciting program of inline skating.

All safety equipment and rollerblades will be provided; however, students are welcome to bring their own safety-approved (with CSA or CPSC sticker attached) helmets. Acceptable helmets include: bicycle helmets, hockey helmets (no cage), skateboard helmets, ski/snowboard helmets. The following helmets are not appropriate for inline skating: BMX helmets, baseball helmets, football helmets, equestrian helmets, motorcycle helmets, any helmet with no chin strap, any helmet that covers the face, or any helmet missing its outer plastic shell.

Please make sure that your student's name is marked on their helmet. Students will also only be allowed to skate if they are wearing socks, please ensure that your child has socks on for their skate days!

This amazing opportunity is thanks to our wonderful New Brighton Parent Council/Association, whose fundraising efforts have covered the costs for all of our students to participate.

Pink Shirt Day – February 25th

Pink Shirt Day originated in Halifax, Nova Scotia, back in 2008, with two high school-aged students who saw a need to be kind while another student was not being treated with kindness and respect. That one act of compassion quickly spread beyond the school. In 2008, British Columbia’s provincial government proclaimed a provincial Anti-Bullying Day in February, and over time, the idea of wearing pink to stand against bullying spread throughout Canada and then internationally. Today, Pink Shirt Day is observed annually in Canada on the last Wednesday of February.

Pink Shirt Day is now a national and global movement that encourages people of all ages to:

-  Wear pink as a visible symbol of support for kindness, inclusion, and respect for others.

-  Raise awareness and start conversations about why bullying is harmful and what we can do to prevent it.

-  Raise funds for programs that help children and youth build healthy self-esteem, resilience, and safe environments.

The Calgary Board of Education recognizes Pink Shirt Day across all schools and offers professional learning and classroom resources that support a strength-based approach to well-being, emphasizing schoolwide and classroom supports for students. As an organization, through Pink Shirt Day, we honour the grassroots act of kindness and reaffirm our shared commitment to reducing bullying and creating welcoming, caring, safe and respectful spaces for everyone.

 Kindergarten Registration for September 2026

Kindergarten registration opened on January 12, 2026.  Registration is NOT first come first served.  Everyone who submits a completed registration form online will be eligible for the kindergarten for the 20026-2027 school year. Typically, New Brighton School holds a random draw for AM/PM placement preference as our AM classes usually have higher demand, and we need to balance our student numbers between the morning classes and afternoon classes. To be in the draw for AM/PM preferences, you will need to have your registration completed before the draw date, which is March 19, 2026. All registrations after March 19, 2026, will be placed in PM classes.

For more information about kindergarten registration, please see the CBE registration guide by clicking here.
