Dear NBS Families,

We are heading into a five-day weekend for our students with Thursday and Friday being Teachers’ Convention and Monday being Family Day. Our school office will be closed during this time as we will not have staff in the building.

We hope our New Brighton School families find some time this long weekend to spend making memories together. Whether it is revisiting old favourites or discovering new experiences it is the time spent together that is important and in today’s busy times often occurs less than we would like.

“Children will not remember you for the material things you provided, but for the feeling that you cherished them.” —Richard L. Evans

Staffing Updates

We are pleased to welcome Kajsa Fenson to the New Brighton School staff! Kajsa has been helping out in our lunchroom on a temporary basis and is now joining us permanently, taking over from Tanya Roberts, who has left to pursue another career. We wish Tanya all the best in her new journey and are excited to have Kajsa as a permanent member of our team.

Additionally, Mrs. Danyluk will be away for the next month or two as she undergoes knee surgery. We know she will be deeply missed, but we are glad to support her on her road to recovery and look forward to having her back—pain-free and ready to run around the gym with all our students! During her absence, Ms. Cristina Vila Dyler will be stepping in. Ms. Vila Dyler has been a familiar face at NBS as a substitute throughout the year, and we are thrilled to have her join the team.

We wish Mrs. Danyluk a speedy recovery and extend a warm welcome to both Kajsa and Ms. Vila Dyler!

Black History Month

Students throughout the CBE and here at NBS have been learning about Black history month. This week, our grade fours learned and discussed what Black History Month is and the history of how it started. Students also listened to books and watched videos on the lives of Viola Desmond and Willie O’Ree to learn more about their lives and how they impacted Canadian history. Throughout the month, they will be reading a variety of books and learning about other Black Canadians who have impacted Canada, both in history and in the present day. They will be learning how they showed perseverance and resilience to stand up for what they believed in and fight for the rights they deserved.

The link below is to a playlist of CBC kids videos, books, short stories etc. if your family is looking to explore more on Black History Month.
