Dear Parents and Guardians,
As we move into the colder weeks of December, we would like to thank you for your continued support in keeping our students safe, warm, and healthy.
With temperatures dipping below –20°C, students will be permitted to enter the school through the doors closest to where they arrive in the morning. Please ensure your child is dressed appropriately for the weather, including warm jackets, gloves, hats, and proper winter boots. Your support helps us keep everyone safe and comfortable during arrival times.
We are still officially considered to be in outbreak status; however, we are pleased to share that for the past three days, our absences due to illness have remained under 10%. If this trend continues, we will be out of outbreak status on December 18th, just in time for our Warm Feet for the Streets evening event. Thank you for continuing to keep students home when they are unwell—it makes a significant difference in keeping our school community healthy.
Spirit Week – December 15–19
To celebrate the season and bring some extra joy to the final week before break, we will be hosting themed days each day next week:
- December 15 – Festive Hat / Crazy Hair Day
- December 16 – Popcorn Sale & Dress Like Your Teacher Day
- December 17 – Dress to Impress (Fancy / Formal Day)
- December 18 – Little Caesars Pizza Fun Lunch & Ugly Sweater Day
- December 18 – Warm Feet For the Streets Evening, 5:30–7:00 PM (More information forthcoming)
- December 19 – Last Day of Classes – Pyjama Day
Thank you for your ongoing partnership and enthusiasm as we head toward a fun and festive last week of school. We look forward to celebrating together!
Warm regards,
Patrick Murphy

You will receive one pair of socks per family to stuff with items, which will be delivered to the Mustard Seed.
You will also have a chance to:
- Purchase a hot chocolate and popcorn for $2 (all donations will be going towards The Mustard Seed & Families Helping Families).
- Visit the photo booth.
- Listen to the choir sing at 6:30 pm.
- Listen to the Dr. Martha Cohen jazz band perform.
- To continue the fun evening, New Brighton School has teamed up with the New Brighton Residence Association to invite families for a fun Family Skate Night at the New Brighton Community Centre. Families wishing to skate will need to present their New Brighton Resident Card or be signed in as a guest of a New Brighton resident.
We look forward to seeing you.

Winter Recess: The Polar Bear Club Returns
As winter arrives, we must prepare for the challenge of indoor recess. The Calgary Board of Education’s inclement weather guidelines recommend keeping students indoors when the temperature, including windchill, drops to -20°C or colder.
In past years, students stayed in their classrooms during these cold days, playing games or watching videos. However, extended periods indoors often impact their ability to focus and engage with academic tasks. Recess plays a vital role in a child’s day, offering opportunities for fresh air, exercise, play, and social-emotional regulation.
To better support our students, we are excited to launch the Polar Bear Club this winter. This initiative allows students to enjoy recess outdoors in colder temperatures, provided they are dressed appropriately for the weather and they have returned the letter (click here) signed by a parent/guardian.
